My apologies first and foremost as it's a short one.
Today I'm going to be reviewing Max Brallier's book 'Can You Survive The Zombie Apocalypse?'
Here's a little bit of the blurb to get you intrigued:
Inside these pages lies unspeakable horror. Blood-splattering, brain-impaling, flesh-devouring horror. You've probably read your fair share of zombie stories. But this time it's different. No longer can you sit idle as a bunch of fools make all the wrong moves. All hell is about to break loose and YOU have a say in humanities survival.
I got this book from a good friend of mine for my birthday a while back and have been too busy to read it.
But, I've got the day off and I figured, why not?
In this book You are a 25 year old male living in New York with a crappy job and an even crappier apartment with your day to day life being mundane and normal; but today theres a spanner in the works, by spanner I mean zombies.
So as you can tell from the title of this book, you need to use you wit, cunning and overall your page-guessing ability to awnser the question everyone has asked, thought about and even put into practical effect 'Can You Survive The Zombie Apocalypse?'
I'm a huge zombie fan/enthusiast, I've read stories such as Robert Kirkman's 'The Walking Dead' (both the comics and the books) to Ryan Casey's 'Dead Days' to 'Bones' by Mark Wheaton; Films such as Shaun of the Dead, Day of the Dead, 28 Days/Weeks Later, etc! I love anything related to or to do with zombies.
And this book was such a refreshing spin on the genre that I did feel like I was making these choices and these choices were ones I would make if such a thing ever happened.
I haven't technically finished it yet, but i've been reading it for a couple hours and have gotten maybe 5 endings, 2 of which I liked, 1 which I fucking adored and 2 which I just went back and changed my choice.
The author of this book has written it so cleverly; the 'story' itself isn't scary as your normal zombie media piece, it's more of a thought provoking real-time chilling feeling. For instance theres a choice between jumping onto a train track to save a child or staying put and saving your own arse. (obviously I went and saved the child)
But what I am trying to say is, that this book is a fun, enjoyable, tense ride and considering it has 50 different endings, I may be reading it fully for some time.
If you own this book, try reading it with a friend or a couple of friends as this book would probably work better in a reading group situation. (mostly to see which of your friends are sadistic and which ones show compassion for their fellow humans) but reading this solo is just as much fun!
To finish this review up, I'll quote my favourite part of this book:
'In front of you, the signing booths. Deserted. Empty chairs, some knocked over. Every booth abandoned.
Except for one.
He sits there. Calm. Giant black horn-rimmed glasses. A green fishing vest. White beard. Pen still in his hand.
George.
Fucking.
Romero.'
I laughed pretty hard when I read this.
